Re: [AlpacaTalk] Blood sample for ARI registry

Laura:
I just have to second how much I appreciate my vet for keeping track of the pyrs vaccines and what they need. Last year she asked me to get the dogs.....and I reminded her that they just had a 3 yr rabies vaccine the previous year -- she just smiled and said she knew, but there were a couple others she felt they should have, especially given their living arrangements......don't remember which they were off hand, but given that they could potentially be exposed to about anything, I figure we need to do it......and was grateful for her remembering!

Now, I just need to get the courage to do my own microchips and draw blood....I've had enough issues with non-nursing crias in the past that I want to be able to run my own IgG's.....I don't mind paying for the test, but the vet's fee for coming out is a killer. I have to reduce as many costs as I can and hers is a big one.......rather save her for any big deals that might come up as well as once a year for ultrasounds.

That is a great idea, but what if you want the BVD done by them AND you plan to sell them.  Can you send in the blood card without registering them?

I love the idea of not having to stick them!  I have micro chips waiting to be done and can't bring myself to do it.  My vet will do if for me next time she is out. She is great about giving shots that I have ready for her and doesn't charge me.  Considers it part of the farm visit.  She will also give rabies shots to the dogsĀ…..love that, too!

A tail stick is usually the easiest.  I think there are a few sites that show you how to do it.  I find it easier on adults than crias.   The crias have little veins and wiggle too much.  I usually stick myself too.

I try to do all of mine at birth using the cord blood from the placenta.  That is super easy and you don't have to stick anybody.

Has anyone ever done the blood sample themselves for the ARI registry? Can you give me some input as to how this is to be done? I would like to avoid a vet visit.
