Re: [AlpacaTalk] Blood sample for ARI registry

Thanks, I'll have to try that this year.  I usually just have the vet drop a few drops of the blood she's drawn for BVDV testing onto the FTA card (which, of course, means I seldom register crias before they're 6 months to a year of age!).

You gather the placenta as soon as it drops.  You then search for the cord still attached to the placenta.   You find the large vein in the cord put a large bore needle into that vein and put the blood on the cord.   You do not mess with the cria end of the  cord.    I think I have pictures of the process I can send you.

Hi Robin - how do you prevent contamination when you gather the blood from the cord?  Do you simply touch the card to the cord tip immediately after birth?  Mine slither all over the place and probably get DNA from other animals on them while they're trying to get into cush or standing position.

A tail stick is usually the easiest.  I think there are a few sites that show you how to do it.  I find it easier on adults than crias.   The crias have little veins and wiggle too much.  I usually stick myself too.
I try to do all of mine at birth using the cord blood from the placenta.  That is super easy and you don't have to stick anybody.

Has anyone ever done the blood sample themselves for the ARI registry? Can you give me some input as to how this is to be done? I would like to avoid a vet visit.
