[AlpacaTalk] Show Facilities

Caroline,
I was so happy to read your post that fine huacaya can lose their crimp when damp.  We have had several do that and I was totally stumped as to what the heck was going on.  I think I will invest in a few more fans.
It is hard for our fine fine alpacas to compete anyway as they tend to think they are not dense.  It feels like cotton candy.  Our boy  who has a 14 micron is awesome but never has done well in the ring.  I finally quit taking him.  I will wait until he matures. I expect he will show well as an adult.

Hi,     As an owner and shower of both suris and huacayas.... thought I'd comment on this thread concering 'fancy' venues verses a tent somewhere.   We typically do 6-7 shows per year, one of them an ALSA.

Suris would show just fine being housed in a tent, but I do have concerns taking huacayas to such a venue.    Depending on weather....rain or humidity.... ..fine microned huacayas need a very dry and cool environment.   Crimp can just about totally disapear unless they're dry.    It's a total waste of time to take our huacayas to a facility that's not cool, dry and supplied with electric for fans.     You say....everyone is in the same boat and the playing field is evened?    Nope....higher micron animals can often still exhibit ok, retaining crimp and character.

We've been to tent housed shows as well as dirt floored horse stalled barns and we won't bother again.     It's not that I require a fancy hotel and facility, I just want my animals to show at their best potential.      However, having said that, I have spent a couple of weekends at unheated indoor facilities.    Spending the whole day there I was truly chilled to the bone and miserable by evening, quite glad to get out of there for the evening!

I think some of the shows are trying to keep costs down as best they can.    We attended the Best of the US this weekend at the OH State Fairgrounds.    It's a very nice indoor facility with climate control and electric.    No checkin pizza served, no dinner or cocktail hour, cardboard chips in place of sod, but still a comfortable facility for us to spend the weekend.   Our animals showed at their best and we had a great time with friends!

Yes, it cost more than a simple tent show, but another aspect that I do like is that it's securely locked and patroled all night long with a state police officer in the building.
