Re: [AlpacaTalk] Blood sample for ARI registry

Jerry and all,
there is now a simple work around for this issue. Simply contact the AOBA show folks if this pops up. They have a form for this function. Easy.

 Folks -

There have been anecdotal reports of vets not willing to complete CVI with BVD test results if they did not draw the blood.  Kind of like the chain of custody for evidence in a court trial.

Best to check with your vet just to make sure you'll be able to get that health cert for the show(s).

As a reminder - ARI now does the BVDV test as well for just $25. You can have that done with the blood sample you send in for registration, but you have to enter into the computer within 20 days of the sample date and they must receive the sample in another 10 days. BUT - it is much less expensive than a vet visit AND you are only sticking the animal once.

A tail stick is usually the easiest.  I think there are a few sites that show you how to do it.  I find it easier on adults than crias.   The crias have little veins and wiggle too much.  I usually stick myself too.
I try to do all of mine at birth using the cord blood from the placenta.  That is super easy and you don't have to stick anybody.

Has anyone ever done the blood sample themselves for the ARI registry? Can you give me some input as to how this is to be done? I would like to avoid a vet visit.
