Re: [AlpacaTalk] Male alpaca in trouble - URGENT

Hi,   I would suspect one of two things and treat immediately for both.    It will do no harm, but hopefully, save him.

FIRST:    He could have a thiamine deficiency.   I would Inject my animal with 6cc of thiamine.  Repeat in 12 hours.  then give it once a day for 3 more days.     If this is the problem, I would expect to see a bit of improvement within the first 24 hours?

SECOND:   Meningeal treatment.
Shot of Ivomec, 1cc per 50 lb .     Give a shot to his companions too!
Oral Panacur or Safeguard, once a day for 5 days, 2.3cc per 10lb
Twice a day for 6 days, shot of banamine, 1cc per 100 lb.
`
I'm not a vet, but have had an animal with meningeal......this treatment will work if started ASAP.    The quicker you start it, the less damage from the meningeal and the better the chance of recovery.    We've also had a animal that turned out to be thiamine deficient.    There again, the quicker you treat the less chance of permanent crippling.

If it's either of these two things, there's no time for testing and absolute diagnosis.    Start the treatments!   Then if you  want to rule out other things you can.

If you have a camelid vet available see him for advice, but be sure he understands these treatments.    I've heard of vets who have not followed these protocols and dosages and the results were very sad.
