Re: [AlpacaTalk] Male alpaca in trouble

Ken:
The protocol for treating M-worm is oral safeguard, injected banamine, thiamine, and Ohio State also gave my girl (last year) an antibiotic. Note that I said that is the TREATMENT. Please call your vet since I am not a vet or even a tech. Oral ivomec will do nothing in any situation that I am aware of. PREVENTION is carried out using sub-q ivomec on a monthly basis of anywhere between about 1 cc per 80-100 lbs. Please note there is a big difference between treatment and prevention. Ivomec does not cross what is called the blood brain barrier so that it does not work once the m-worm has found it's way to anywhere near the brain or spinal cord. However, while the worm is still migrating from the gut to the brain, it does work. Hence, it is prevention. I would dose the other alpacas (and even this one) with ivomec. The one that's all funky I'd immediately give safeguard to at least at the rate of 1cc per 10 lbs......again, I am not a vet and urge you to contact someone who is qualified to make a good diagnosis and give you the latest info on treatment. the kind of symptoms you outline I imagine could also be an injury or other things, but I doubt that safeguard or ivomec would cause any harm. Even banamine and thiamine are fairly safe drugs if given at the proper dosage, but it sounds like this guy needs a look see by a vet.

Good luck with him and let us know how he gets on.

For M-worm, Ivomec needs to be administered sub-Q. if you are in M-worm territory, you must give Ivomec injections once a month, without fail. Safeguard does nothing for M-worm. I don't know thew protocol for active M-worm infection, but i do know that oral doses will not do a darned thing.

If your boy is infected, he needs veterinary attention immediately. Even with early and aggressive vet attention, they do not always survive.

I hope that our members who have dealt with M-worm will share their experiences with you and the group.

Please call your vet tomorrow!

I rescued a 2 year old male this spring, my first alpaca. I noticed Coco was walking around with his head turned slightly to the left on Friday but didn't think much of it. Then on Saturday his neck was more to the left than on center and by Sunday his walking was not as "graceful".

Are these signs of the Meningeal worm? I live in Kentucky and deer are plentiful. From what I have read, they are. To be on the safe side I picked up a bottle of Ivomec injectible and gave him an oral dose of 1cc per 55 lbs body weight today and will do so for two more days. I am going to follow that with 5 days of Safeguard at twice the rate for cattle. Does that sound right ?

Also, should I go ahead and do this for his two field friends, a male and female alpaca that I got him so he isn't lonely.

I caught him and had a good hold on his halter, he was none to happy. He didn't like the Ivomec much either. It is amazing how tight he can keep his mouth shut. On the 3rd or 4th squirt he had enough and managed to manuever quickly and just enough to snort in my face. NASTY ! It was diliberate and accurate. But I did get all the meds in him. I was surprised that he was leaning into me, alost pushing me ove trying to hold his balance. I am hopeful I caught it in time and I am correct in thinking it is deerworm. These animals are so special and wonderful. I never would have thought I would fall in love with a camel's cousin. Any comments will be greatly appreciated.
