[AlpacaTalk] Male alpaca in trouble
I rescued a 2 year old male this spring, my first alpaca. I noticed Coco was walking around with his head turned slightly to the left on Friday but didn't think much of it. Then on Saturday his neck was more to the left than on center and by Sunday his walking was not as "graceful".
Are these signs of the Meningeal worm? I live in Kentucky and deer are plentiful. From what I have read, they are. To be on the safe side I picked up a bottle of Ivomec injectible and gave him an oral dose of 1cc per 55 lbs body weight today and will do so for two more days. I am going to follow that with 5 days of Safeguard at twice the rate for cattle. Does that sound right ?
Also, should I go ahead and do this for his two field friends, a male and female alpaca that I got him so he isn't lonely.
I caught him and had a good hold on his halter, he was none to happy. He didn't like the Ivomec much either. It is amazing how tight he can keep his mouth shut. On the 3rd or 4th squirt he had enough and managed to manuever quickly and just enough to snort in my face. NASTY ! It was diliberate and accurate. But I did get all the meds in him. I was surprised that he was leaning into me, alost pushing me ove trying to hold his balance. I am hopeful I caught it in time and I am correct in thinking it is deerworm. These animals are so special and wonderful. I never would have thought I would fall in love with a camel's cousin. Any comments will be greatly appreciated.
