[AlpacaTalk] RE: female acting funny/worming
<<< Hi Janice;
It's hard to say what the cause was but based on what you said, I am
going to say the baby was probably causing some discomfort for her. We
have a few females that will go through that every once in a while.
Seems like they are going into labor but they just happen to be going
through the Braxton Hicks contractions. If she is acting normal now, and
she seems to be doing ok, sounds like you are good to go. Just keep an
eye on her in case it is something different. The more aware the breeder
about the animal, the better!

Thanks, that was my feeling. She has been totally normal since that
evening. I am very excited as I really didn't think she was preg due to
high extreme stress during shearing in May (I thought she was going to
go unconscious she was so stressed and hyperventilating.
really nothing terrible happening to her, she is just high strung and
had never been a chute before, previously always sheared laying down on
a pad). I have such bad luck getting healthy crias born and losing so
many early in pregnancy that I have just not given any thought to her
being preg (assuming she miscarried, if preg, with the extreme high
stress). I separated the male last Jan after her last cria was born in
late Dec, but had seen them mating a few times before I separated them
so her only chance of being preggie was from early Jan. I meant to let
them run together in the early fall but got busy and forgot, so was
waiting for spring to give them another chance. This possibility was
just not in my consciousness.
night and all of a sudden a light bulb went off. Yippee, hopefully
another healthy cria, I pray it will not be early, esp a winter birth.
Question....
this week-end but did not get to it. When the current monsoon (3-5"
today on totally saturated ground) ends I will be doing thatlater this
week. Since I now expect/hope that she will be giving birth in 6 wks
or so (if not early) is it safe to inject her? She has not had ivermec
injection since late Aug, no Safeguard since March, so I know she really
needs to be wormed, but I don't want to risk the baby either. I was
going to do the ivermec and in about 2 wks or so do their 5 days of
Safeguard and continue the monthly Ivermec until early spring.
I have a note in my records that females are skipped for 45 days after
mating; I have a vague memory of stopping before due to give birth as
well but don't have that written down. What is the rule here?
Thanks! Janice in NW GA
