Re: [AlpacaTalk] wall baby

Hi Carolyn:
Tried milking her, but all I get is a drop. No spray or volume to speak of. At least the cria is persistent! Poor Mom's just worn out. Baby's toes were right behind the cervix, but it took some doing to get them...her cervix was tight! Anyway, finally got them out while the vet was on the way. Mom just gave up at that point and vet just pulled baby out -- but said all seemed okay with no tears that he could tell. Baby looks like her knees are on backwards, so I'm just hoping they straighten out -- she's down on her pasterns too, but does have slightly erupted teeth. She's sucking down 2 oz. like nobody's business!...and then went back to Mom, so Mom's getting the stimulation...at least while I'm out there. I think it will all work out, but will try the towels. While she was down (after baby was born and vet was checking her) I put cool towels on her udder, inside thighs and pits........she was wet with sweat -- hottest day of the year, out in the sun, and working like nobody should in that heat and humidity-- maybe I inadvertently put the kabosh on the milk?...but Mom had to get cooled a little ..and it was the only thing to do for her at that point. that poor girl just didn't look too good at that point...and I was worried. Baby didn't do the usual flopping either -- just worn out from the birth. but after about 1.25 hours, baby was trying to suck and had Mom and babe in the barn. Babes holding her temp with the fan on her, but will check through the night, too. This could have been much worse, so I'm just grateful it wasn't. My first dystocia and my first maiden birth -- wasn't stellar! Anyway, when I first brought mom in, she drank a little, but really waited until toward evening to suck it down...and hopefully that will help too. She had to lose a lot of fluid between birth and the sweating she did, so maybe her increased water volume will help too....hope so anyway.

Thanks for the suggestion. I had half way thought about that, but with the heat, didn't want to do anything to heat anybody up anymore than they were already. with night upon us, it is starting to cool a little, so....hopefully it will work. I really don't want a bottle baby, but been down the road of immuno-compromised and choose not to go there if I can help it!

Thanks again,
Susan

Hi Susan,     Wet a dish towel as hot as your hands can stand it and run that out to the barn.    Apply it to your dam's teats until it cools down.      Repeat in 20 minutes.   Usually 1-3 rounds of this will bring in the milk if it's there.    Did you try milking mom to see if it's there and nice and sticky?
