RE: [AlpacaTalk] Re: Help, I need advice on replacing my girls after the dog attack.
The seed of truth to the superiority of full Peruvians is that the Peruvians were not available to the U.S. until the last years of importation. Additionally, the bulk of the importations in the last few years were Peruvians and this is when we had the screening protocols in place for imports which identified and enforced a standard in both conformation and fiber. This was something that previous importations did not have.
Also, at that time we weren't the naive Americans we were previously, and were much more educated about what a good alpaca was. The screening protocols helped us eliminate lower quality alpacas that might have been imported in our earlier years.
I recognize that borders were still fluid and that there have been many fine alpacas from elsewhere, but there is that grain of truth to the "Full Peruvian" thing that helps keep that marketing angle alive. It is time to accept that it is losing its relevance however. Folks not experienced in livestock and having no clue what they are looking at when they make a purchase, could generally be assured of a level of quality when they purchased full Peruvian.
I will be happy when we can get away from these labels and start making purchases based on the quality of the animal standing before us with adequate consideration of pedigree and progeny.
