Re: [AlpacaTalk] signs of labor

Thanks Allison!

I've been in attendance at several births and feel I know my girls pretty well, but this girl had me baffled yesterday. She's also the first maiden I've had give birth as well, so that's my excuse! After a couple of unexpected phone calls, I finally got out around 9. I hate having to get a hold of late term girls, but decided to try to check her ligaments (she's been super squirrely lately and I can't just walk by like I can with others). In any case, I missed it with her mother, but I do think they were a little softer. I decided to go finish up some things in the house and forget about her for the night. I'll go out in another short bit and check on her, but I ended up thinking the same as you wrote. She's new at this and I've wondered often whether she knows she's pregnant and it's a baby kicking the crap out of her or if she has the human equivalent of worrying that she's dying! This is a new experience for her both psychologically and physically, so things might work a little different all the way around from what I'm used to seeing in experienced girls. In terms of the rolling, throwing her legs out, not getting up, not eating......all has been normal. She will take a dust bath with the rest of them, but that's it......nothing to get excited about and not even as often as some non-pregnant girls. She had a minor 'shaky thing 2 weeks ago, but it was one time and on a chilly morning......I ended up thinking she just got a slight chill. So, I'm heading out to the barn in a few minutes to check on her and expect all to be well, though there could be a new cria.

Thanks for your response.....I appreciated seeing that someone else ended up feeling as I did by 9:30 -- and now to hurry-- I hear a storm rolling my way!

Hi Susan,

This sounds like "pre-labor"…sort of the maiden alpaca equivalent of late term Braxton Hicks contractions.  She will probably get down to business during a morning within the next 48 hours.  If it goes on much longer than that, I' d begin to be a little suspicious of a problem.  If she rolls a lot suddenly, then I'd want the vet out.

But for now, I have seen this in a maiden before.

Hi Folks:

I'm feeling a bit foolish, but I've got a girl that just doesn't feel right to me. She's 357 days and for the most part looks normal and okay, but there's something I can't put my finger completely on that doesn't feel right with her. She's eating, then cushes in 'her spot', drinks, and is rail flicking a lot. This girl is also a maiden.  I don't know if she's in labor or not. She has hummed a little (she's not usual vocal) and I've seen her yawn several times since early afternoon. Otherwise, she doesn't seem in any distress. She did go to the poo pile and poo-ed and peed then went to another pile and started to 'assume the position', but not fully. It's almost 8:30 here and going to get dark. I'm going to grab a bite for myself and then go halter her and check her, but beyond that, I haven't a clue as to what to do or know what's going on....Any thoughts out there? I hate to call the vet since I don't know what I'd say........could this be early signs of trouble? early signs of labor? Or am I just plain nuts!?

Thanks,

Susan
