Re: [AlpacaTalk] Re: Help, I need advice on replacing my girls after the dog attack.
Thank you Janice for the nice words and I am glad if my story helped someone else in the short or long run. I am very happy so far with my choice, I won't be receiving my new girls until next Friday, but as of now I am content with my decision. I am also looking for LGD's. At least 2 but I want some that are at lease 1 or 2 years old. If anyone has some please let me know. Have a great day.

resolve this in relatively short order. Were you ever able to identify
the dogs that attacked your previous girls?
I just wanted to thank you sharing your horrific experience and let you
know that it inspired me to move on something I should have done a year
ago. As soon as you posted I got to work putting up electric fence as
the coyote(s) were coming closer and closer at night. I was going on a
walk about several times all night long with my GSD. Then I recently
started seeing fox in the daytime. I decided a LGD was a necessity as I
didn't totally trust the electric fence to do the job and have been
piling all the ducks and guineas in the chicken pen at night as it is
closer and a bit safer at night (they are all free range in the day).
Plus have been keeping all the alpacas in the front pasture at night
which is closer to the house and safer than the adjacent wooded
pasture. But the male is having to be left alone in the wooded pasture
at night and I still was not sleeping well. Plus the electric fence was
only hooked up at night and when I am away from home during the day. So
I knew the birds were not being protected from daytime fox attack.
So this past week-end I brought home 2 Great Pyr puppies. They are
doing fantastic so far, tho the alpacas are less than thrilled with this
latest addition to their pasture.....
is handling it like the cool, collected, self assured champ she is. The
others are following her lead and slowly getting over their terror as
their curiosity gets the better of them. It will be a while before the
puppies will actually be able to guard and protect (for now they are
only out of their pen in the pasture when I am there to supervise), but
if you had not shared your experience I never would have taken this step.
Good luck and Congrats again on this very exciting new chapter for you.
Warmly, Janice in NW GA
