Thanks to everyone for the continued advice...you have no idea how much you all have eased my mind about this!

Mary, you asked if I had any experience with other four-legged friends -- just the usual cats and dogs (there's always been at least one or two cats and dogs in my life at any given time, usually multiples of both), but nothing larger than that like horses or sheep, etc. Several years ago I actually had the intention to own sheep eventually, not alpaca, but decided a couple of years ago that alpaca were easier to take care of and that their fiber was more desirable to me as a handspinner (this is my primary reason for getting into alpaca ownership).
