Re: [AlpacaTalk] wall baby
Heather:
Good luck! I hope everything turns out okay for you as well as Mama and Babe. I'm dealing with a maiden that had a rough delivery this morning. Cria is a tad dysmature with funky legs, but stands and walks okay. I've been out hourly since birth to make sure baby was nursing...and finally decided she just wasn't getting enough even though it looks like there's something there. In any case, started making sure she was attempting to nurse and then started giving her 2 oz of bovine colostrum every 2 hours about 5 hours ago......I'm exhausted already! Figure I'll just go out every 2 hours through the night and hope she starts refusing the bottle by 2 a.m.! Not sure what else to do, but don't want the expense, hassle or worry of ending up with an immuno-compromised cria, so bovine colostrum it will be until it's gone...and then onto milk until Mom gets hers in better. But a rough delivery I hear can take a little longer for the milk to come in........Mom and baby were both exhausted, so it isn't surprising.
Again, good luck and hope your baby catches on......for what it's worth, I leave the barn light on all night for the first couple of nights....maybe that will help baby find the udder...... Keep us posted....

I think I got baby to nurse off mom but it's hard to tell if she got anything. It sounded like it, but there was no milk mouth afterward. She was born well before 8am, and it's now 6pm. No considerable nursing off mom yet. She's had 12 ounces of cow milk and yogurt with 10 drops of GSE since she's been eating dirt.Going back down now to milk out mom and at least get the colostrum into her via bottle if necessary. She took the bottle very well, and likes fenceposts, but gets angry when we put her under mama.In 11 years with alpacas, we've never had a wall baby. Not fun.Heather
