[AlpacaTalk] wall baby
Hey everyone. Quick note to ask a question regarding wall babies. We
had a baby born today, very early AM, and when I got out around 8.30,
I found her mostly dry and trapped between a gate and a wall. So she
literally bonded with the wall and eats dirt and cobwebs.
I have given her a couple of bottles, she's had about 8 ounces today
so far. And I am desperately trying to teach her how to nurse off of
mama. But, she is already very "spirited" and spits when I try to
teach her to nurse from her mama. Baby spits, not mama. Mama knows
it's her baby and is doing her best, but a mama alpaca can only do so
much. She is an excellent mother and this is the first wall baby
we've had.
So, in addition to keeping them outside so baby only has mama's
underside as a dark spot, and keeping baby from eating dirt, what
else can I do? We've given Sepia (homeopathic remedy) to the cria to
try to get her bonding working right. She's semi bonded to me because
I found her and freed her from the little prison. Why she's follows
me, I don't understand, because her dam was nearby all morning, and
I've only been around a little bit.
