Those were the days---I was an intern approximately 25 years ago. Now I
am an internist, or perhaps more appropriately, a specialist in adult
medicine, as opposed to a pediatrician. As an aside, I actually
considered switching to large animal veterinary medicine, but was unable
to convince the powers that be, that I would have liked to have gotten
credit for some of the courses I took, in addition to 25 years of
experience. I was informed that that would be "impossible" to do and
that I'd have to start at the beginning. I even offered to pay for the
basic academic courses I wouldn't be taking, if I could take and pass
the exams (not including the clinical courses or those pertaining to
different species, which I understood would be necessary). With the
shortage of large animal vets, it's too bad the veterinary schools
couldn't think outside the box.
