[AlpacaTalk] Re: Hello new alpaca person here
Michelle -- welcome.
A couple of things. First (this is only somewhat tongue in cheek) --
you've bought livestock, not poodles. Unless their top knot or cheek
fleece is preventing them from seeing anything, don't worry about
about trimming them more than once a year,as a part of shearing.
Even if you plan to show them, the rules are 'field grooming' (get
the worst of the dung and hay off, don't touch the lock structure).
Second -- for a lot of this, you should be able to rely on the farm
you bought the guys from for help. If you can't do that for any
reason, you can search for the closest breeders on alpacanation.
alpacastrett.
to make the time to help support new owners.
Also, if you go out to youtube, and search on alpacas -- you can find
everything from toe trimming videos to (my personal favorite), the
alpaca/blair witch project (a young girl following around one of
their dams giving birth).
Lastly, pick up a couple of books on raising alpacas (the new Dr.
Evans Field Manual, Eric Hoffman's Alpaca Handbook, etc), as those
contain a wealth of information (very much worth the price).
Congrats on buying your first "kids" -- they incredible addictive!
Cheers,
Dani
