Ah, topknot, sure! Many people use picks to comb them out. To be
honest, it's a losing battle. Wait for the mud to dry and it'll flake
off on its own. The bits of hay will come out to some extent. When the
topknot gets too matted and long, I trim it off with scissors, making
it all the same length from the scalp. It makes the topknot shaped
correctly, and in a day or two it looks good as new. Usually we only
have to trim topknots once a year, although we do have one girl who
seems to need it every month!
