Re: [AlpacaTalk] Hello new alpaca person here

Hi Michelle! Welcome to AlpacaTalk!

Our local feed stores carry many supplies we need, however we have our
own custom alpaca feed milled. Please make sure you feed only a formula
made specifically for alpacas. All-breed feeds are not correct for
alpacas and can actually harm them. Or, many people feed just high
quality hay and an alpaca loose mineral supplement. And plenty of
water. :) We use Stillwater minerals. They're available online at
Stillwaterminerals.com To tell you the truth, the smallest size they
have is 10 lbs, and it'll take forever to go through that much with
only 3 boys, maybe you could buy some from a local breeder as needed.
We put out a about 1 cup at a time free choice and replenish as needed.
The thing is, after a certain amount of time, the vitamins degrade over
time, so it's no good to have 10 lbs for years!

We buy lots of things at Valleyvet.com or Jeffersvet. ValleyVet has
free shipping on many items and they do have some of the lowest prices
around. We also like horse.com a lot. And Farmtek.com Many people will
tell you QualityLlamaProducts.com or UsefulItems.com too.

Good thing to know, you don't have to groom them, that might be why you
haven't liked the results you've gotten. :) In fact, you're really not
"supposed to" groom them at all, especially once you get into showing
them at halter, and brushing a fleece will wreck it's character for
fleece shows. Again, once you get to that point. :)

For trimming toenails, we use a Burgeon and Ball pruning shear which is
available at many feed stores going as goat trimmers. They have two
straight blades, about 1 1/2" long, and very very sharp.

I recommend getting in touch with other owners in your area for support
and education. Also maybe find your local AOBA affiliate. You're
welcome at meetings, I'm sure, and most breeders are very generous with
time and information.

Again, welcome!
Heather
