RE: [AlpacaTalk] Need a little help, little discouraged...
Hi Steve,
I thoroughly understand your frustrations and concerns. Here are a few
tricks that have worked for us.
1. We would NEVER put a "new" male into a paddock containing one or more
"existing" males. When mixing males, we always put them, one by one, into a
new paddock. That way, none of the males "owns" the paddock.
2. We've found that putting the males we want to mix in a trailer and
taking them for a ride makes them bond a bit. Try taking them for a short
ride and then putting them into a new paddock.
3. You can distract them from the fact that one of them is new. Give them
each a large bowl of their favourite treats. Go into the paddock with a
strange dog.
4. If possible, make sure that the males can't see any females, unless
until the settling down period is over.
We have 17 mature males in one paddock and they get on reasonably well. We
had one male that wouldn't get on with any of the others we put him with
him. He would chase them until they both collapsed in a heap. We kept him
on his own for over a year. One day, the thought came to me to put him in
with a dozen other males. Even though he was the biggest (230 pounds), he
cowered in the corner for about a week and has never been a problem again.
I'm about out of ideas. Hopefully, you will be able to get this behind you.
Good luck,
Chuck Rademacher

Subject: [AlpacaTalk] Need a little help, little discouraged.
Hi guys!!!
First I want to thank everyone for their responses to my previous post. I
really appreciate
all the responses. Now I'm back with another question.
About a month ago, we bought our first Suri stud. We quarantined him, he
was away
from the rest of the herd for the length of time we bought him until now.
Vet checked,
wormed, and healthy we tried to blend him in with the rest of the herd.
Our trouble began
today. We put him in with the rest of the boys today and all he'll broke
loose. The other
two boys won't leave the new one alone. The poor Suri, they chase him
around the
pasture and he screams terribly. I don't know what to do, how to help them
to get along.
Any advice?? I'm desperate...
Steve
