Re: [AlpacaTalk] Quick question about new fiber boys...
Hi there,
Sorry, I didn't see the original post so am going to reply to Jim's, although I really am addressing the original question :)
I would run a fecal, even though you wormed them.? Were they diagnosed with worms before you got them?? You really don't want to worm them unless you know what you are worming for, plus you want to recheck in a couple weeks to make sure you killed the worms.? Did you do the panacur for 3 to 5 days, or just the once, and what dosing did you use.? They might also have coccidia, which isn't affected by the wormer.??You mention they are getting along with the rest of the herd - is the herd other alpacas or?a different animal?? Were the new boys quarantined before they were introduced to other alpacas?? ?If not, then you might want to spot check?fecals on the?others in the herd.
As to the grain, I personally wouldn't worry too much about that.? Some people feed no grain (pellets, supplements, whatever you want to call them), just a good quality hay, a mineral supplement, and Vitamin ADEB paste once a month.? My geldings get grain once a week. ?Grain is mainly to give them any nutrients the hay may be lacking.

Sorry I dont have an answer for you, and sorry no one else has offered any.
I have an 18 month old boy that was born here. When he was running with the rest of the herd, he had all the opportunity to eat grain. He still does not eat grain. The vet suggested mixing grain with water and squirting it in his mouth. He said after a few days, he would come to ME for it. NOT. I went so far as to soak the grain with milk replacer, and added plain yogurt, mixing it all up. And just before I give it to him, I back the plunger a bit and slip a couple grains in, to give him something to actually chew. This has been going on now since the middle of Feb 08. I use an old probios tube. He gets about half in the AM and again in the PM. He eats hay and grass fine.
I have had two females born here that ate grain very early, one was about a month old. The other started at about two weeks old, about two weeks before her Mom died. She became my bottle baby, and lived in the house at night. Brandie was two days short of a month old when Aran died.

Subject: [AlpacaTalk] Quick question about new fiber boys...
Hey guys!
New to the group, and already I have a question...LOL.
here it goes... We just bought 2 fiber boys, a bay black and a
white. They are both about 4 years old. They both blend in nicely
with the rest of the herd. We had them vet checked before we brought
them home. We had them here a few days before we did anything with
them, as far as worming goes, due to their extensive travel. They
were in a trailer for about 5 hours for the drive, and we figured
they'd been traumatized enough on their trip without us poking them
with needles and shoving Panacure down their throats as soon as they
got to their new home. They've been here for a little less than a
week, and we've wormed them both. Now my question. They really
don't seem interested in eating grain at all. The bay black will
pick at it a little bit, and the white one wants nothing at all to do
with it. He ate a quarter cup one morning, and now wants nothing to
do with it at all. On top of that, the white guy has extremely loose
fecal matter, deep green, which I'm assuming is from eating a
different kind of hay/grass. We gave him some Kaolin for that, and
it seems to be helping. Some of the farms we've visited don't feed
their boys any grain at all, and I'm wondering if that's what's going
on here. Any comments/ things I should try???
