I am also a newbie,had a similar question recently, and here's what I
found, based on my notes from hearing Dr. Evans at MAPACA this spring
and in his book, 2003 edition, page 18.
He wrote, in regard to deworming or vaccinating in the first 60 days
or last 30 days of pregnancy, "about 6 to 10% of known pregnant
alpacas absorb due to this stress in the first 60 days, and a similar
number birth early after handling in the last 30 days."
He also wrote "any wormer or vaccine administered days 14-28 of
pregnancy has a chance of producing a congenital birth defect."
You need to read this for yourself as he writes more in regard to
various other stressors on pregnancy.
Here's how I interpreted the advice concerning deworming. I am
assuming that in the early days of pregnancy, before the egg is
implanted and fetal development has gotten underway, that the fetus
is safe from outside influence. I therefore timed my monthly Ivomec
shot to be given in the first few days after conception. I usually
give it every 28 days, will delay the next shot a couple of days. My
notes from the seminar indicated that he gave the time frame as "15 -
30 or 35 days", rather than the 45 days that he indicates in the book.
In regard to giving Ivomec in the latter days of pregnancy, I am
interpreting his words to mean that it is the stress of the shot,
rather than the medication itself, that is the danger. Since my
animals do not get excessively stressed-out over their shots, I
didn't worry about this and gave the shots in late pregnancy without
incident.
