Re: [AlpacaTalk] Cria/Mom questions
Steve:
I sure can't speak for Dr. Evans, but I think the seminar I went to,
Ivomec and monthly meningeal protection were the exceptions he noted
to the wormer/abortion/
was something along the lines of damage to fetus v. dead mom....in
other words, risk v. benefit. As for gut worms and dirty fecals (if
you've had a positive one), I would try to worm now, before she is
re-bred. Same for any vaccines that may be needed.
As for your comment on there being many ways to do things, I would
have to agree in some respects while noting that meningeal worm
protection is NOT one of those! Personally, I really try to look at
the differences that I find and figure out what makes most sense from
where I'm sitting and with my animals...ie separating Moms and babies
-- I can do that with a couple, but there's one that will not
tolerate it under any circumstances, so I stay as far away as
possible. Many times, it's just an individual call based on your
knowledge of your animals, sometimes consults with your vet, and in
the end, you have to be comfortable with what you end up doing.
Good luck and congrats on the new baby!!
