Might be a bit harder to find out the squre footage of the offices
being leased, but the math is pretty simple - rate X sq ft = value.
Certainly wouldn't be the first time that someone inflated the value
of a non-cash charitable contribution, which I would assume is how it
was claimed.
You have to make a mental shift. Really successful people can make
money at anything they do. When they say they are helping, they
really believe it, and from that perspective there isn't anything
wrong with making money while helping.
Laborers see the wealthy getting rich off the fruits of their labor.
A valid perspective!
The rich see themselves helping the laborers by providing
employment. An equally valid perspective!
When Libby states that they help support 26 families, she genuinely
means that. She probably does not understand that such a statement
comes across as arrogant and condescending any more than you
understand what the world looks like from her position.
So, we end up with everyone pissing on each others' legs, which takes
none of us anywhere but down.
If there is evidence of illegal or unethical conduct, let's deal with
that. Lacking such evidence, let's drop it.
I am still of the opinion that there are conflicts of interest (in
the narrow definition I offered before). That those conflicts exist
is, in my mind, a reflection of poor judgment. I can give numerous
other examples of what I consider to be poor judgment, even if based
on good intentions. I, for one, am perfectly fine with leaving it
there.
I do not see the gain in the little guy attacking the big dog anymore
than I see the gain in allowing Libby to use a bully pulpit
unchallenged. Grates against my sense of right and wrong ;-)
