Re: [AlpacaTalk] Fonzie's eye
Great news Wendy. Yes, we have one 200# male who believes toenail trimming
is a heavy contact sport, so we also keep Rescue Remedy on hand.
Sounds like your vet has the situation wired. We've had several scratch
situations and all have responded dramatically to the ointment alone, so
you've got an extra layer of treatment with the Gentocin. We've also got
Gentocin on hand, but if someone needs a shot in the eye it'll be left to
the vet!!!
I realized I sent my previous reply direct to you rather than the group, so
I will repeat it below.

Hi Wendy...
Best event so far is that the vet is coming.
When we observe symptoms such as you have described we treat with BNP or
BNPH ointment, which we always keep on hand. If there isn't dramatic
improvement within 24-48 hours we see the vet immediately. Should your boy
need BNP, keep the following in mind...
Okay to use BNP on any alpaca, male or pregnant female. However, BNPH
contains a steroid, and cannot be used on or near a pregnant female. Also
don't use BNPH on a male that is nursing as they could transfer the steroid
to the dam and cause an abort.
Good luck and we'll be watching for the outcome.
