Well, Libby...
First I am accused of treating people with contempt, which seemed
like quite a leap.
Now we have gone from "giving" to "budgeting for promotions."
Since we are talking business now, let's get down to basics.
It seems to me that two basic models are margin per item, or volume
of sales.
In other words, I can try to get a net margin of $1000 on one sale,
or I can get a net margin of $100 on ten sales, or I can get a net
margin of $1 on one thousand sales. All three get me to the same
point when the books are balanced.
If we are talking business, then it would seem that AOBA could net
the same amount of income in ways that are far more equitable than
$5000 Benefactor status. Such a high fee is quite elitist.
It clearly angers quite a number of people. It provides benefit in
an inequitable, and ultimately unfair, manner to a small group. It
is, quite frankly, indefensible.
The failure to acknowledge such inequities is what I was originally
speaking to. It now appears that it is not a simple matter of not
acknowledging the inequity, but more a matter of defending it.
Shall we simply dismiss those "poor huacaya breeders" as a bunch of
"whiners"? I mean, after all, if they are unwilling or unable to
make the decision to promote their business by investing 10%, 15%,
50% or more of their annual farm income in the Benefactor program,
well, that's on them, isn't it? Their Association need not show any
allegiance to them, since they are not supporting the Association at
the level deemed appropriate for the times, right?
I think we are all fortunate that there are some AOBA Directors that
are beginning to take a serious look at member retention problems.
It may be a sign that the era of elitism and inequity are coming to
an end.
Best regards,
John Merrell
