[AlpacaTalk] Virus Update & AlpacaWatch
Alpaca and Llama owners are continuing to send in their reports to
AlpacaWatch. There have been a number of counties added, and one more
death. I am waiting for a number of Necropsies, which will be posted on
the site when they come in.
Total herd size reported: 4269
Total number reported infected: 2177
Total number of deaths reported: 47 from owners and 6+ from
vets/universities
The latest reports of infection were from this past week. Some of the
animals involved have had moderate to serious cases. Please be sure to
practice viral precautions

are not successful is their lack of information coming in from
throughout the country. They only know what they are seeing at Ohio
State University. I have wondered how ICI was expected to get their
information. From what I understand ICI's job was to report possible
threats not just in their limited region, but throughout the US/North
America.
Part of ICI's Mission Statement says:
* "Strive to provide owners and veterinarians with the most accurate,
timely information available to optimize the health and well being of
camelids."
* "Act as a rapid reaction entity to issues involving emerging
disease, emergency situations, and urgent health care and information
needs."
ICI failed in these two primary goals. Interestingly portions of one of
my letters is posted on their Emergency page regarding the virus,
although they do not include my name or signature.
AOBA spent a large amount of money to help organize, develop and support
ICI. The idea was to have a second party that would be responsible for
following the alpaca community, and alerting members of possible issues.
This was a way of taking the decision making out of the hands of AOBA.
However, it failed when AOBA second guessed ICI, and did not pass on the
information, when it finally was sent out.
The main reason that I believe AlpacaWatch will be successful if because
of the 616 members. I live in Northern Maine, and do not know what is
happening in California, Florida, or IllinoisÂ…. from day to day.
Each of our members will make AlpacaWatch work, because they are the
eyes and ears for their area, region and state. I do not want to leave
this important issue in the hands of AOBA, ICI or any other group. I
believe that we, the owners, should have the control of this important
issue. If you agree, Please Join the AlpacaWatch Team!!
