<<<Janice I know what you mean about just trying to keep the herd alive.I feel I am struggling for that end goal myself. Your herd will likely be breeding at night while they are together in this heat not during the day.I have divided my animals into small groups of males seperate small groups of girls. That way everyone has access to fans, sprinklers,
I have continued separating them at night! They better NOT be breeding.
I only have one shady pasture, and that pasture is the one directly connected to the small barn where there is a fan.
But at night they actually prefer being in the other more open pasture.
I treid sprinklers a few years ago, but no one would go anywhere close to them and I grew tired of wasting the water/money.
I have 2 now that cush right in the kiddie pool that I fill up for ducks. They used to just stand in them, then one started cushing in the pool.....no room for ducks when she does that!
I go out and hose them down. They generally come and line up, jostling for position, but this past week they were acting very strange....not coming for their hose down, in fact running away from it. Very very odd. I am thinking they were disoriented from the wicked heat. In addtion to not coming for their soaking, they were laying out in the full sun....like idiots. Even the solid black ones, in fact *especially* the solid black ones. Go figure. It was a chore to get them up and force them over to the hosing down area. Like I said, usually they will jostle around to get the closest to the hose, then do full body blocks to keep the water from going over to the next one. Then several of them would just cush right in the mud and stay there. This past week however they won't even check out the muddy areas I make for them to cool off in. Really weird.
We got a break in the weather today. Wonderfully bearable.
That's me and ALL the critters breathing a huge sigh of relief.
