Re: [AlpacaTalk] Re: Wonderful news
Janice I know what you mean about just trying to keep the herd alive.I feel I am struggling for that end goal myself. Your herd will likely be breeding at night while they are together in this heat not during the day.I have divided my animals into small groups of males seperate small groups of girls. That way everyone has access to fans, sprinklers, cold water without competition. Its HOT.... Tina in Missouri at Elkhorn Alpacas
<<<The tiny mite started nursing from Mom yesterday. Everytime I went to give the bottle. She was under Momma. We have been weighting her at the same time everyday. She weighed in yesterday at 15.4 lbs. She has finally gained. That is almost a pound since birth. Normal poops.
She is very active and starting to actually run around. She still drags her little head some, but not all the time any more and not all the way to the ground. Possibly some strain on her neck when momma cushed during birthing? Things seem to be improving and she is nursing from the booby bar constantly. Momma is happy as well.
Thanks for all your prayers and encouragement.

Such great news! I haven't been on the list for the past week with heat related issues to deal with with all my critters. Just trying to keep everybody alive in the brutal heat.
Trying to catch up on email today.
So great to see things are improving Chrys! That's what the wonderful people on this list are the greatest at - offering solid help, info, and encouragement.
One of the things I've had to do to help deal with the heat a bit is let the girls and boys mingle. I have had them separated for several years now (thanks to the beating up I rec'd here on list for letting them run together). But due to the configuration of my woods and barn (with the only fan/electricity available) I have had to let them all come to the barn. The last thing I want is a summer baby! BTDT and don't want to do it again. But my stud is showing absolutely no interest in the girls at all. Too hot I guess. I hope so. I am keeping a close eye on his behavior.....not hard to do since I am having to go out every hour or two to hose everybody down and change out everyone's water to keep them in cool water. It is just brutal here.....as it is most places. We have broken every heat record ever set. 112 the past several days. It has NEVER been this hot here - not any day.....ever.
My July Snowball was weak as a kitten Chrys and also couldn't stand nor nurse for the first 5 days or so. He got a lot of extra care, some IV stuff (its been a long time and I've forgotten the details.....it was back when I actually had a vet) and he eventually came around. For several days we thought he was paralyzed in his back legs. Now (7 or 8 yrs later) he's my dancer - he will stand on those back legs to graze the tops of the privits in the pasture. He's a hoot. Perhaps its the heat affecting your baby. I think that was one of the problems with my July baby.
Great to see Carolyn posting; she held my hand thru a number of emergencies and other non emergency problems, and was invaluable and generous with her knowledge. Haven't seen you on here in a long time Carolyn. Good to "see" you again. Hope all is well in your corner of the planet.
Warmly, Janice in GA
