[AlpacaTalk] Re: SOS - cria issues

I did not take anything as rude. You didn't have all of the details. The post was already longer than I had expected. She started getting up, standing, and walking around a bit on her own. I just need her to keep that lil' head of hers up. She is pretty much cushing correctly now and stands pretty good. Temps have stayed in the normal range, but she did lose a half pound between day one and day two.

Still eating......and I am still praying.

I know every 2 hrs is hard for the first few days.Once she is taking more from the bottle you can extend time between feedings.First at night 4-6 hrs depending on how much or little she takes.I didn't mean to sound rude but it sounded like you hadn't fed her but once yesterday and I knew she would soon crash on you...With dysmature cria its a waiting game to see if the lungs are developed. They are born with enough Surfactant in the lungs for 3days so the body has to be able to make its own surfactant by then or they go into pulmonary arrest. It is possible to do a transfer from mom to cria but it is risky for both and VERY expensive to have done.It has to be done by specialist in a vet school setting. With a bit of good luck she will be a survivor.... I wish the little one the best. Tina in Missouri at Elkhorn Alpacas
