Re: [AlpacaTalk] Question regarding Foxtail Hay Seedheads

We've had them in our hay with no problems but I try to avoid them because they don't like it and make a mess.

We bought some hay last year that a horsewoman was getting rid of due to the Foxtail Seeds and problems her horse encountered. At $4 bale, we had to try it.

We kept a watchful eye on our alpacas and no problems ensued.  NOW, that doesn't mean they never will, but in our case, no problems.

Subject: [AlpacaTalk] Question regarding Foxtail Hay Seedheads

I was asked if Foxtail Seed heads cause the same problem in alpacas as it does in horses. The condition as described is due to the strands on the seed head get caught between the horses teeth creating inflammation that is often misdiagnosed as Hoof and Mouth disease. Similar conditions. I could imagine it would raise the devil in topknots and fleece but we are seeking information if other concerns exist.

Thank you in advance for your help, Michael
