Hi Carla,
The grubs in your pile are probably not Japanese beetles because their life cycle demands eating the roots of sod. Those grubs in your pile, if it has alpaca beans are probably dung beetles. I unearthed some enormous ones last fall and very gingerly placed them in safe spots of the pile as I was consolidating it. Those are the good guys!

Don't wait until fall to use the traps. The traps should be used the first time you see a beetle, which the way things are going could be very soon around here (Ohio) where it has been unseasonably warm.

The lawn damaging grubs are very white, while the dung beetle grubs (3 different species of varying sizes) are more beige or yellowish. If that helps! Glad that you are going the non-pesticide route! Hope it works well for you. One caution is to place the traps away from what you are trying to protect. You don't want to be calling the little buggers to dinner!
