[AlpacaTalk] Re: New Member
Hi Shelly,
Welcome to the world of alpacas. They are lovely peaceful animals that do steal your heart.
I tend to disagree with some of the comments about pkg deals and going out of business sales. There are a lot os situations that contribute to these sales. They are not always a pkg of failures. When we bought our alpacas 14 yrs ago we bought some pkgs.
There is sickness, death, and divorce that contribute to a lot of these sales. Most of these people have been in business 10+ yrs and are more than willing to mentor you . I personally know of 3 situations in the past month that have required immediate liquidation of their herds. They were all top quality animals needing a new home.
Ask for references from the farm you are purchasing from. If they have happy customers they will be more than willing to provide them.
Beware of forceful sales tactics !
Judith is a wonderful and very good mentor. She is always willing to help even if you haven't purchased your animals from her.
We wish you the best and many years of alpaca ranching.

Both are good shows, and most shows offer some pretty basic educational seminars at every show, so just see if there's something in particular you'd like to get in on. Some programs have fees and advance registrations required, but you should be able to find out on the website and can contact the program coordinator to make sure there's space before you drive a long distance.
