RE: [AlpacaTalk] RE: our cria, Magnolia May
Okay, we chose to supplement her with a non-alpaca supplement and this is controversial and has been discussed before on this website. I am not advising anyone to do what we did- only answering your question. (ok-disclaimer done)
We feed her alpaca grain separated from the others so none can get her share. We have given her one cup of Manna Pro/Calf Manna and two cups of her alpaca sweet tex/partial pellet in the am and pm. She was nursing up until four weeks ago, too. The Calf Manna is made of alfalfa and has anise in it-they LOVE it.
I also found a horse feed for gestating/lactating mares. The copper level is fairly low……..she gets ½ cup of that. Some people say not to feed it but the vet doesn’t think it is hurting her. We don’t have high copper content in our area.
Her hip area has filled in nicely and she looks pretty good for an old gal. She is almost 14 years old.
Like anything else, make sure you research the supplements and determine they are safe. Horse feed normally has more copper added because horses needs are higher than alpacas.

<<<My other weanling is doing great
and her mom is the EPE girl who weighed 115 when she arrived on Nov 1 and as
of June 1 she weighs 145! She is due to deliver Sept. 5, so we have three
more months to help her build herself back up.

Laura, what did you do for the EPE girl? That is great that she is
putting on weight.
Love the new cria's name!
