Re: [AlpacaTalk] Alpaca Treats

Mary,

Thanks for your response.  I love the quote from the Dalai Lama---it's that simple and that challenging.

I'm like you Dave, while I lean toward veggie for me, my daughter is definitely a carnivore. And while my dogs are happy digging carrots and parsnips out of the garden to crunch up while I'm weeding, I can guarantee if I offered them a steak instead I think the carrots would go untouched.

I frequently wonder why people ask these things about alpacas. Just last weekend I was at an event with a couple of my males and I can't count the number of times people asked me what they ate -- while they were happily stuffing themselves with hay. Not that I don't give them the ocassional apple or carrot and they love it when the pears drop every fall from the pear tree just outside the pasture, they would be ever so grateful for a field of lush grass and nothing else.

Heather,

Many experts would disagree with your contention that humans are herbivores.  I believe their dentition would classify them as omnivores.  Any dentists or paleontologists on this list who can give a more expert opinion than I?  And dogs would appear to be carnivores, looking at their dentition, again in my opinion, though there is some argument about this in the literature.  Be that as it may, humans and dogs can subsist on a slurry of essential amino acids, and certainly on a combination of vegetable matter that contains same amino acids.  While I can understand an ethical discussion for vegetarianism, I question whether this is really desirable for a dog or a cat, for instance, their being carnivores.  My dogs and cats will chew on grass, the cats to rid themselves of hairballs, I believe and the dogs (?) for who knows what reason.  They do like veggies and fruits too, but we try to keep this to a minimum.  They live long and healthy lives and have healthy skin and coats.

I don't see any reason why an alpaca would not like veggies, their being herbivores.  When the discussion comes up annually, I have to laugh at all of the different treats alpaca owners feed their alpacas, though.  Mine do very well on grass and hay---well tested out, supplemented with some of the minerals in which our environment is deficient, here in the Northeast.

Dave - humans are vegetarians (according to how we classify teeth) and a lot of them subsist on a carnivorous diet, as dogs can also subsist healthily on a properly made vegan dry food.  We feed our dogs chicken-based dry food though.
