[AlpacaTalk] Re: Alpaca treats

The only treats I use, just when visitors come or to make an unpleasantness more pleasant (like halter training or a long physical exam), are supplements like Calf Manna or alfalfa pellets, if I have them around. One big exception--and it is my favorite, is Wild Rose leaves! Discovered this by accident, but if I had known how much they liked wild roses I'd have ALOT less scars! They particularly like them in the spring when the branches and thorns are still soft. When I prune I Hold the branch out or weave it into the fence and they strip it bare in no time. Their limber lips manage to avoid all the thorns and holding it/weaving it, gives them the tension they need so they can tear the leaves and don't get the stem/thorns. I make sure the branches don't end up in the paddock b/c they HURT when you step on them barefoot. I also discovered that some of my girls LOVE stinging nettles--yeah! Another thing I no longer need to clear our of the pasture!

As for fruit, etc., most of mine won't eat anything they aren't already familiar with. If I can get the piggy, the llama or a cria, to try something, than the others might just b/c they can't stand someone else getting something when they aren't.

There is one pear tree in the pasture that they keep a good eye on. I think they have a contest to see who can get to the pear first! I have not had a pear off that tree in the 5 years the alpacas have been here. Funny thing is if I buy a pear at the store and bring it home, they really don't like it. They love apples and take them from my hand. They will also eat carrots that my aunt has lovingly sliced up for them but they won't eat them from me.
