Re: [AlpacaTalk] Blood sample for ARI registry

Elden,  you are most welcome to your opinions but could you explain why you would want a BVD/PCR test and now want verification of parentage?   Does that mean you are not registering your alpacas?

ARI will not release BVD test results prior to parentage verification. I don't like this restriction and is why I probably will not have my BVDV tests done by them any more

That is a great idea, but what if you want the BVD done by them AND you plan to sell them.  Can you send in the blood card without registering them?

I love the idea of not having to stick them!  I have micro chips waiting to be done and can't bring myself to do it.  My vet will do if for me next time she is out. She is great about giving shots that I have ready for her and doesn't charge me.  Considers it part of the farm visit.  She will also give rabies shots to the dogs…..love that, too!

A tail stick is usually the easiest.  I think there are a few sites that show you how to do it.  I find it easier on adults than crias.   The crias have little veins and wiggle too much.  I usually stick myself too.

I try to do all of mine at birth using the cord blood from the placenta.  That is super easy and you don't have to stick anybody.

Has anyone ever done the blood sample themselves for the ARI registry? Can you give me some input as to how this is to be done? I would like to avoid a vet visit.
