RE: [AlpacaTalk] elephant skin
Elephant skin has myriad causes, among which some of the commonest are mites (scarcoptes or chorioptes) and also selenium deficiencies and zinc deficiencies.
We had a girl who tested negative repeatedly for mites, witch’s brew did not seem to help…
Dr. Polllard suggested that we give her a body shampoo with “selsun” blue or a “knockoff” thereof…and that worked wonders for her elephant skin. We brought her out on a nice warm day and lathered her up. We let it sit on her about 7 minutes then rinsed her with warm water. I added a good oatmeal dog shampoo just to pamper the skin and rinsed that out thoroughly. IT worked like a dream. We repeated this process again in 2 weeks ----and we’d already seen remarkable progress.
We have not had to do it again and it has not reoccurred. Charmane was not going in the show ring and the “shampooing” seemed to give her a lot of relief….to the point that she willingly took the second bath and liked the gentle scrubbing on her new, pink skin.
I did warm the water I rinsed her with….just so it was not icy cold. This could not be done in winter…but it surely helped during warm weather!
This may not be what is causing the problem with your animal, but if it is not mites, then this is as good a guess as most!
Good luck and tell us how things turn out.
