Re: [AlpacaTalk] elephant skin

Sarcoptic mange mites causes it. They are not always visible under the microscope when a skin scraping is done.

We have had some minor cases, and a few major cases. We've tried every treatment out there including Permethrin sprays (don't work). We've tried the "Witches Brew" which contains DMSO and is very drying to the skin, doesn't work and causes more damage than the mites. We've tried Neem Oil, which doesn't work and smells incredibly awful. We haven't found Ivomec to be effective in treating for mites, either.

The only treatment I've found that does work is Frontline. You can either buy the spray, which is about $40 for a 16 or 17 oz bottle. I have also used the top spot for giant breed dogs, applying with a syringe (no needle) near the affected areas.

I have also used Ovitrol spray, which prevents eggs from hatching, I think, and prevents mites from reaching reproductive maturity, in case the Ovitrol didn't kill them.

A lot of people still don't accept that mites are the cause, I guess because so many mite treatments don't work. But, the Frontline and Ovitrol really have worked well for us.
