[AlpacaTalk] sick cria necropsy

After the necropsy and seeing the wood and big plug between his stomach c1 & 2.  It appears that the hay and some fiber wrapped around the wood and made a really hard ball about the size of a marble. There was nothing short of a major surgery that would have saved him if that.  It is so nice knowing what happened.   Even if it passed thru the stomach area it would not have passed thru the spiral colon.  He was in big trouble and there was nothing we could of done.  Lord know why he ate wood or how he even swallowed that piece of it but he did.    I have no regrets on our end we did what we could and loved him as much as we could and cared for him and made him as comfortable as we could.   Now we are dealing with a very sad mom who just lost her first cria and she is breaking my heart.

:(( Oh I am so sorry!
It is so hard when they are so little, everything happens so fast, and we always look back and regret and wonder and beat ourselves up... it's all a part of being stewards of these creatures.

This is not to say that we still don't do all of the above- BUT that is one reason I never hesitate to get the vet out- even if the previous results were bad- at least a doctor is calling the shots along with me.  I had to work hard with our 4 horse vets to get to the point where we are are now, where I can question and disagree and have a long back and forth, and pull out all my books- but all the work it took to get to this point is SO worth it in the end.

I remember one time in particular where we here did EVERYTHING the vet- and my gut- told us to do, we even had the cria living in the house with us for a while, we worked on the baby 24/7 for three weeks and she still didn't make it.  The pain of losing her was just excruciating. .. but I took great comfort from being able to discuss why what we all did didn't work with our vet, and hearing her tell me I did everything right- even though the outcome was horrific- helped a lot with my healing.

I hope that you are able to heal and look back on this without regrets- hugs for you my friend!

Well our little guy did not survive. On necropy his stomach was full of fiber and he had a huge air bubble in his large intestine. Not sure what all that means. I did not ever see him chewing fiber other that the normal rough house play the cria's do. Very sad for us all.
