[AlpacaTalk] Re: guard llama

I have a female guard llama as well. I think the biggest benefits of guard llamas are 1) they (mine at least) are always on the lookout and alarm loudly and usually earlier than the alpacas, 2) thier size would hopefully intimidate some predators, 3) farm visitors (and me) love them because they don't mind being petted and groomed and 4) they eat the same thing as alpacas, albeit MUCH more. Unfortunately, as far as protecting against larger predators, really they are just bait to slow it down and give you a chance to get out there with a gun. They dogs are far more effective for actual protection.

I'm actully re-homing soon her b/c I only have 1.5 acres and she eats and takes up as much room as 3 alpacas (she's 400+ #) and I'm almost at capacity. She also did not read the poop pile book and goes everywhere and anywhere (including waterers and hay bins) that she happens to be. While I do have coyotes and bobcats in the area, we have no larger predators and alot of nearby houses. Anyway, good luck with the puppies!
