[AlpacaTalk] RE: sick cria update

<<<Our little cria two years ago cost a fortune and they just wanted to
put her down. I am happy to say she is a very happy healthy two year old
now. I do call the vet when I think they can assist. We had a girl with
a bad labor and had the vet come out and check her to make sure all was
OK after the birth, she was on banamine and antibiotic for a week after
delivery. I don't want you to think I would never use a vet but I am
learning their weaknesses and hate the 2 grand vet bills.
Thanks for all the ideas and support.

I totally understand Robin, I am in a similar predictament here. I used
to call the vet out for every thing - the outcome was never good - I
buried SO many alpacas and had nothing but huge bills to show for it.
None of the vets around here know a thing about alpacas; I had one vet,
and only one, who was willing to work with them. I bought him a copy of
Dr Evans manual, but still the outcomes were never good. Things changed
when I no longer had income and simply could not afford a vet. I
haven't buried an alpaca since.....knock on wood. I have had some
pretty serious issues however and would give my eyeteeth for a good
vet. There is just nothing worse than seeing your animal obviously not
well and not know what to do. I am forever grateful for the guidance
and support I receive from the good people here on this list.

I have written here many times about the miracles of goldenseal
(hydrastis). It is amazing in its healing power. Unfortuantely 99% of
what you purchase does not have the active alkaloids as GS is an
endangered plant, no longer allowed to collect from the wild, and is
quite expensive. The only brand I trust (and know for a fact they test
for alkaloids and breed for stronger plants - I grow for them) is Sleepy
Hollow Herb Farm. They have website you can order from and tons of info
on GS. If you order from them, please let them know I sent you over; I
make nothing, but they have heard my stories of miracle alpaca cures
with GS and I like them to know when I send someone their way :-). I
use it internally and externally on all my critters, including my 2
legged (kiddos) and myself. I have seen it work miracles. I will never
be without it and I buy the large 4oz bottles from them to always have
on hand.

Warmly, Janice

I just read further and saw your little boy didn't make it. I am so
very sorry; the first post that he made it thru the night was so
encouraging to read. It is always great to run out there upon awakening
with that worried pit in your stomach first thing in the AM and see them
still alive. I am just so very sorry. I have never heard of them
eating fiber - off other alpacas? Something else I didn't know I had to
watch for! It is so hard to lose these guys. I have buried more than
my fair share of babies and adults alike. Gosh darn it, it is just SOOO
hard.
Big Hugs to you, Janice
