[AlpacaTalk] Re: cria with low pasterns

We had a premature alpaca cria born this spring with low pasterns. I found conflicting advice as to how to handle this. I read that they can injure their tendons by too much activity. Others say they need the activity to strengthen the legs.

She was so knock-kneed that she couldn't take more than a few steps without falling over so there wasn't much running going on. We compromised by keeping her and mom in a small paddock area adjacent to their stall for several days, allowing her out in the pasture only with close supervision.

Each day we could see improvement and on the third day she was good to go with the herd.
