RE: [AlpacaTalk] wall baby
HI folks,
Don’t forget light colour Karo syrup for cria…and even a bit for the dam if she’s really tired and “all in”…it will help with her vigor as well…not a huge dose, you don’t want her to get the runs…and just some on cria’s gums will help with the overall bounciness of the cria.
Sometimes I give new mommas a “cocktail of whole oats and rolled corn and beet pulp with a little flax seed over the usual pellets and with the herbs for lactation…and into this mix I cheat…..I put some dry milk to help replace their calcium from a hard birth. We are not talking a lot….just about 2 Tbsp. dry powder. They don’t seem to notice it and it goes down with the rest of it. You can use a little probios in apple juice sprinkled over the mix to sort of moisten it slightly …the beet pulp is already moistened and wrung out.
With new moms it seems to help with their post birth milk letdown and to restore some strength.
I use the main mix on thin moms who are pregnant while nursing the last cria…it helps to keep them in condition. While their bodies are under such strain.

Hi Carolyn:
Tried milking her, but all I get is a drop. No spray or volume to speak of. At least the cria is persistent! Poor Mom's just worn out. Baby's toes were right behind the cervix, but it took some doing to get them...her cervix was tight! Anyway, finally got them out while the vet was on the way. Mom just gave up at that point and vet just pulled baby out -- but said all seemed okay with no tears that he could tell. Baby looks like her knees are on backwards, so I'm just hoping they straighten out -- she's down on her pasterns too, but does have slightly erupted teeth. She's sucking down 2 oz. like nobody's business!...
Thanks for the suggestion. I had half way thought about that, but with the heat, didn't want to do anything to heat anybody up anymore than they were already. with night upon us, it is starting to cool a little, so....hopefully it will work. I really don't want a bottle baby, but been down the road of immuno-compromised and choose not to go there if I can help it!
Thanks again,
Susan

Hi Susan, Wet a dish towel as hot as your hands can stand it and run that out to the barn. Apply it to your dam's teats until it cools down. Repeat in 20 minutes. Usually 1-3 rounds of this will bring in the milk if it's there. Did you try milking mom to see if it's there and nice and sticky?
