Re: [AlpacaTalk] The poop on Alpaca Poop

Hi Nan
Speaking of alpaca poop, we  worked on our compost pile all day yesterday.  The alpaca poop, mixed with straw, garden leftovers and green grass has been composting since last year and made absolutely beautiful dirt.  We are planning on using it for a rasberry patch. It is so AWESOME to see how Nature works-and we didn't have to pay for a load of dirt to be hauled in!!
As others stated, it is the urine that is acidic and unfortunately, they always deposit that along with the beans on your best patch of green grass.
It takes some work but eventually you can make some wonderful compost/dirt.  We have three piles:  Fresh stuff, Cooking and Done
We do use direct beans on our flowers, around the trees & bushes but last year we had some in the vegetable garden that had not composted properly (needs about a year) and I believe it was the cause of a few intestinal "issues".  Nothing severe but enough to make me note: won't do that again.
Now that bug season has started, I will use DE (diatomasious (sp?) earth) in the poop pile areas after I have cleaned them up.  It has helped in keeping flies and parasites somewhat controlled.  We get the NOT-edible DE at a local Pool/Spa store. You can also get edible DE to sprinkle on their food but it can be quite costly to get it shipped and I have not found anywhere local that sells it.
Have fun on your Alpaca poop fact-finding mission.  There are lots of us out here with lots of experience in the subject!!

Hi there,
We raise goats and are new to Alpacas. I notice that the Alpaca poop,
unlike goat poop, kills the grass and attracts bugs.

Questions:
How do you treat your poop piles?
We can just put fresh goat poop on plants, looks like Alpaca poop is caustic
and needs composting.

I am interested in as much poop info as you can give me. Do you compost
it? Is is acidic or basic?
Thanks,
Nan
