[AlpacaTalk] RE: The poop on Alpaca Poop

<<< Hi there,
We raise goats and are new to Alpacas. I notice that the Alpaca poop,
unlike goat poop, kills the grass and attracts bugs.>>>

Hi Nan, I rake up and move my alpaca poop directly to my garden and
growing areas in the winter/spring where I usually mix it with shredded
leaves, but have been known to plant directly in it when I haven't been
able to carve out time to rake up the leaves. In the winter I put it in
the compost piles....it makes great transplant and plant holding areas
as it decomposes it is incredibly rich and beautiful. It grows amazing
plants! It does not kill the grass in my pastures, in fact the grass
grows beautifully right thru it. That is where it is spread out a
bit. My original pacas all pooped nicely in a communal pile, yet the
ones that came later didn't have such nice manners and poop ALL over the
place, including in their hay shed if it rains all day or night :-(.
Where there are consistent piles the grass has been killed, which I
rather prefer as it eliminates them grazing grass that is growing thru
poop.
I never gave it any thought, but I agree with the others that it is the
urine in a concentrated area that is likely killing the grass. I have
shady areas where no grass at all grows. do they poop there? Heck no
they go choose a lush grassy area to make their deposits. Go figure.

On another note, for some reason I am only getting the whole week's
posts this morning. Jim, I am so glad your boy is up and doing better
now. It is heartwrenching to watch them like that. sounds like you at
least have a good vet close by and that is a blessing.
Can anyone tell me where to get FibRevive? Sounds like I need to keep
some on hand.
Deb, if you're reading - is that what you were picking up for me a few
weeks ago?

Alpacas have been off my radar for a few weeks as I deal with other
needs and other emergencies. I feel like I rotate thru emergencies here
and there is never enough time to pay attention to everyone and
everything all the time....so I have to rotate my attention. It is good
to see some activity here, I haven't seen any posts from anyone in quite
a while, guess everyone is busy with spring as I am :-).

Warmly, Janice in NW GA
