[AlpacaTalk] Re: LGD

I haven't totally been following this thread but I have 2 dogs. A pyr and a pyr/ marremma cross. When I got the first dog (the pyr) she was 1 year old and I was told she had Bird experience. The FIRST thing she did when she got here was to chase my birds and try to eat a duck. It took a LONG time working with her but she is totally fine with birds now. As a matter of fact one of her best farm friends is a muscovy duck who preens her. When the duck stops preening she nudges or paws him to comtinue. It's adorable.

The second dog was 8 months when I got her. She has never had a problem with ANY Of the farm animals including the 2 "yard bunnies" running around. Funny thing is she had never seen a cat and she has been chasing them a bit but she also listens very well and takes my corrections to heart. It pays to know what you are getting and who you are getting it from. If it is a pup, hopefully the breeder has livestock and can give you a heads up about the dog's early tendencies. If it's an adult dog - it's good to know what stock they have worked with and get honest info about their general nature.

I couldn't be happier with my 2 dogs. They suit our farm well. I have small children and they are both also great with the kids and very friendly rather than super aggressive as I have seen at some farms. I LOVE them.

Good news is, I have seen many Pyrs as of late up for adoption simply because of the death of a farm owner, dog didn't get along with the other dog there, people had too many adult dogs etc etc. All great dogs, trained - but not able to stay where they are for one reason or another... Hope you find what you are looking for!
