Re: [AlpacaTalk] RE: LGD

Janice:
For what it's worth, my rescue lost her goat herd and the guy that bred the dog I bought took her in. He had 7 pyrs at the time, so was more than eager to give her to me when I bought Maggie. So, she was a working dog before I got her -- after the goats, she was in with alpacas for a month or so before she came home with me... the only problem I've had was that one of them -- Maggie, I think -- killed about 5 of my 6 guineas. It's a long story and I'm not sure the dogs were completely to blame.......I actually think they were taking their cues from the alpacas who were trying to stomp the hens, but can't be sure. I will say that my one remaining guinea-Fred- will eat dog food out of their bowls as the dogs lay there. The dogs got the chewing out of their lives when I found the dead guineas, and Fred seems pretty safe out there now. I may try another hen or two, but we'll just have to see what materializes. That kind of change in the dynamics can confuse them and it amazes me that they didn't kill the guineas sooner....actually, the guineas lasted all summer and it wasn't until Septmenter that they 'bit the dust'. It also amazes me that these dogs can be taught to leave your birds alone, though there are some that can never be trusted with birds.....but just watch how birds move and you'll understand how the prey drive can't help but come through sometimes. Anyway, good luck with finding a nice more mature dog.......I know they're out there!

Thanks Susan and Flossie, I will start looking around. There is woman
here that does a large dog rescue, no particular breeds; bless her, she
just goes around to all the pounds each week on the day before put down
day and takes all. I am told she loves each and every one as her very
own. She must have tons of money, but bless her for what she is doing.
I keep meaning to get intouch with her. I think I will try harder to
find her contact info and let her know what I am interested in.

I have also seen a note up at the feed store last year for some G Pyr
puppies for $200 but I did not even call as I had just determined from
the posts I had read that they were more trouble than they were worth
and would perhaps kill my alpacas.
Given my time constraints I also felt that an older one, used to being
with livestock, would be better for me. But question being able to find
a good one that someone just did not need any longer.

In the meantime I have decided, even with all the caveats, to put hot
wire along the outside of my alpaca fences until the time when I have
lgds I can trust. Originally I was just planning on that for the horses
and future goats to keep them *in*; now I am going to do it for the
alpacas to keep other critters *out*.

Warmly, Janice
