[AlpacaTalk] Fencing/Hay

<<We have a no-climb fence and a v-mesh but a lot of people use the
moveable panels, as long as they are fenced in with mesh.>>

Susan, you use a no climb fence, v-mesh (I don't know what that is) AND
2 hot wires? We just have regular old field fencing and I am feeling
quite inadequate now. But do not have the means to change the fencing
at this time. I am wanting to add another fenced area, whenever I can,
so I can rotate my guys. So will have some choices at that time as to
what kind of fencing to purchase.

Also, as to hay Michelle......I was told that orchard grass was the best
for alpacas, but the only source I could find in my area was really
crappy hay - tried buying from the guy 3x the first year I had alpacas
and each time he pawned off on me awful moldy hay and small bales
(round) to boot. I was hip to what he was doing by the 3rd time and so
went a wee bit early in the hopes of picking out my own bale, but he was
already waiting for me with the bale loaded on his front end loader
waiting to drop it into the truck. I called him the very next day and
told him it had sprouted mushrooms overnight! He said that would not
harm them. We rolled that big roll of hay (had to get help) right out
of the pasture and it still sits today way outside the fence rotting. I
never purchased from him again. I have fed whatever bermuda I could get
my hands on (we have had a terrible drought and major hay shortage
around here for the past 4 yrs); coastal when I can get it, but whatever
bermuda I can find I am thankful for. This past summer I even took to
letting them out in the yard to graze (and the horses as well)as hay has
become so pricey and hard, next to impossible, to get straight bermuda.
Everyone around here grows fescue and mixed grasses. I bought a
year's supply in the fall....well it *should* have been a year's supply
but they have gone giddy with so much hay and have been strewing it all
around (like horses) which they don't usually do.

Warmly, Janice in GA
