[AlpacaTalk] vaccines/worming

Thanks Morgen and Heather for the info.
I have always done CD/T (at least when I had a vet), but will read more
thoroughly what Heather sent and reassess that. As for buying the large
size bottles, what I always read is that you should not store multi use
bottles, that you should only purchase the amt you will use at one time?
But heck at that price, that is cheaper than buying the individual
doses, even if I only used a bit and then threw the rest out! Altho I
purchased a large bottle of dectomax and my vet used out of that same
bottle for several years.
I think your advice is sound about tetanus and rabies and m-worm. I
agree that tetanus should be given (and I do get that myself and for my
older dd, not yet the baby). I have not been giving rabies simply
because I think the risk is so low, but you are right - I think I will
add that to there care. Here in GA a vet is supposed to give the shot
just to get it registered with the state. If you give it your yourself
there is no official record, so it doesn't count should an attack occur
and they will impound your dog. (I only know about dogs as they have to
have the tag, don't know about livestock). So here we go again with the
vet monopoly. However I know i can purchase mail order, so will check
into both.
Menigeal worm - If you have been reading my posts for any length of
time, you know that I have not been doing the shots the past 2 yrs due
to many factors - overwhelming stress in other areas of my life, and
just basic total lack of time to focus attention (due to the other
factors), beyond the bare necessities, on the animals. I have been
worried sick about it and am trying to get myself back on track with all
this prevention stuff. According to my discussions with Dr Evans he
has said that Nov thru Feb are the most critical times, so I am focusing
on just doing it those months for now. I am counting on the ducks and
guineas to keep the snails out of the pasture....that is my natural
control. Still I feel I need to do the injections Nov thru Feb anyway.
If I can get to a point of ease with administering the injections I
will go back to doing it every month. When I had a vet, he would come
once a month to do this and it took both of us holding the critters
while he stabbed them. He was much much quicker at it than I am. It
takes me forever to find a fold of skin loose enough to inject into.
And I don't have anyone but my 10yo to help me hold them still.
So I am trying to get myself psyched up to capture (not terribly hard),
halter (very easy) and shove Safeguard down their throat (very hard) for
5 tortuous days and then to do their Nov Dectomax injection on that 5th
day. I am going to try that behind the elbow site mentioned here. I
think now I will add rabies and tetanus shots at that same time - once
of course, not monthly! I don't plan to worm anymore until spring when
I will start the DE and planning on adding the garlic as well every few
months. And hope never to have to do the 5 day torture dance with
Safeguard again!
Warmly, Janice in GA
PS I joined Alpacasite this summer, but was immediately overwhemed and
never open the digests. I am sure there is tons of great info there and
I wish I had time to read it all. I just don't. They just pour into my
inbox.
